What we're looking for

Essays, memoirs, oral histories, and anything that surprises us.

Long Play is listener driven just like the cassette liner notes. We are interested in what sound does to people, how memory is stamped with the sound of music, how sound changes lives and how sound can be home far from home. We take a broad view of sound as it is experienced and are open to all categories including music, podcasts and audiobooks.

We especially welcome pitches from new writers from around the world.

3,000 – 4,000 words
Shorter pieces
1,000 – 2,000 words
What to send
A completed essay only. We do not commission from pitches at this stage. Send us the finished thing and we'll get back to you if we think it's a good fit.
Format
Plain text or a Google Doc link. No PDFs.
Response time
We read everything. We will get back to you. It may take a while.
Rights
We ask for first publication rights. The work remains yours.
What we don't publish
Reviews. Press material. Anything that reads like it was written for someone other than the reader.
cassette is for keepers.
